Rubio, Qatari PM Discuss Defense Cooperation Amid Iran Talks

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met on Saturday with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to discuss defense cooperation between Washington and Doha, as well as broader efforts to maintain stability across the Middle East.

In remarks shared on social media platform X, Rubio emphasized US support for Qatar’s defense capabilities and described the bilateral partnership as important for deterring regional threats and strengthening security cooperation.

A spokesperson for the US State Department said Rubio expressed appreciation for Qatar’s role as a partner across multiple regional issues and highlighted the importance of continued coordination to address security challenges.

The discussions come amid ongoing diplomatic activity related to tensions involving Iran and wider regional security concerns.

Reports cited by Axios indicated that Rubio and US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff also held separate talks with the Qatari Prime Minister in Miami, focusing on efforts to advance a possible agreement aimed at ending the conflict with Iran and establishing a framework for broader negotiations.

According to those reports, Qatar has been acting as an intermediary in communications between Washington and Tehran, operating alongside Pakistan, which has formally served as a mediator since the start of the conflict.

The reports also suggested that US officials view Qatar as playing a particularly effective behind-the-scenes role in facilitating diplomatic engagement with Iran.
