Roeper High School Forensics Team Wins Record Third Consecutive State Championship

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., May 07, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Roeper School High School Forensics team captured its third consecutive Michigan Interscholastic Forensic Association (MIFA) Class C/D State Championship, the first three-peat in Roeper’s history. The 18-member team competed at Eastern Michigan University on April 24-25.

Often described as “track and field for the voice,” forensics is a competitive speech activity focused on public speaking and performance. A key draw for families in the region, forensics has become one of Roeper’s signature programs, reflecting the school’s commitment to developing confident communicators, critical thinkers and engaged global citizens.

“This achievement reflects everything we value at Roeper – intellectual curiosity, courage and the ability to communicate ideas with clarity and conviction,” said Anne Glass, Head of School. “Alumni frequently cite forensics as one of the most influential experiences of their time at Roeper. Our students aren’t just finding their voices; they’re learning how to use them to stand up for what they believe in, connect with others and make a meaningful impact in the world.”

Top performers included:

  • Semifinalist: Jeannelyn Newsome (9th, Storytelling)
  • Finalists:
    • Co-Captains Cosmo Steffke and Meira Gable (5th, Duo Interpretation)
    • Justice Broughton (2nd) and Kaitlyn Gruber (6th, Dramatic Interpretation)

Additional top 20 finishers included Max Richmond (Extemporaneous Speaking), Nawa Okwudire and Max Rogan (Impromptu), Brogi Amaral (Informative), Olive Ballard (Oratory), and Brendan Little (Prose 9/10).

The program’s continued success reflects the strength of its coaching leadership. Head Coach Dan Jacobs was named Michigan Middle Level Forensics Coach of the Year by Michigan Speech Coaches, Inc. (MSCI), two years ago, while Assistant Coach Laura Moore earned Assistant Coach of the Year honors last year. Together, along with coaches Ben Fisher and Jaffar Boumediene, they have helped guide Roeper’s resurgence, including its first state championship in 30 years in 2024 and now an unprecedented three consecutive titles.
