Greece Moves to Deploy Patriot Missiles to Aegean Island

(MENAFN) Greece has positioned a Patriot air defense missile battery on the island of Karpathos in the southeastern Aegean Sea, Greek media reported Wednesday, as Athens moves to reinforce its regional defense posture in response to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

A broadcaster reported that a Greek Navy amphibious vessel docked at the port of Pigadia, offloading the MIM-104 Patriot missile system onto the island, which sits strategically between Crete and Rhodes. Footage circulating from the scene showed military convoys hauling components of the air defense battery along the island's main road toward pre-designated deployment positions.

The deployment follows a series of alarming incidents involving Iranian drones near the British military installation at Akrotiri, located in the Greek Cypriot Administration. British authorities confirmed that one drone touched down on the runway at the Akrotiri base, though no casualties or significant damage were reported. Two additional approaching drones were successfully intercepted.

The Patriot system deployment is the latest in a series of defensive measures Greece has extended to the region. Athens had previously dispatched two frigates and four F-16 fighter jets to the Greek Cypriot Administration in a show of defense solidarity.

The island of Karpathos, given its proximity to Cyprus and position along key eastern Mediterranean air corridors, offers significant strategic value as a forward operating platform for regional air defense coverage.
