China Urges Security in Strait of Hormuz to Protect Global Trade

(MENAFN) China on Wednesday reiterated the need for “security and stability” in the Strait of Hormuz and its surrounding waters, highlighting the critical role of the waterway for global cargo and energy supplies, as stated by reports.

“Safeguarding security and stability in this region is in the common interest of the international community,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said during a briefing in Beijing.

The statement follows a warning from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Monday, which declared that the Strait of Hormuz had been closed to transit and threatened to attack any vessels attempting to cross. “The Strait of Hormuz has been closed. We will attack and set ablaze any ship attempting to cross,” said Brig. Gen. Ebrahim Jabbari, a senior adviser to the IRGC commander-in-chief.

Mao urged restraint from all parties: “China urges all parties to immediately cease military operations, avoid further escalation of tensions, prevent further turbulence, and avoid causing greater impacts on the global economy.”

The IRGC warning comes amid ongoing US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran that began last Saturday, reportedly killing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and 786 others, including dozens of schoolgirls. In retaliation, Tehran has carried out drone and missile strikes targeting US-linked facilities in Gulf countries, resulting in multiple fatalities. Six US service members have also been killed, with many others injured.
