AWS cause widespread disruption to websites, online services
(MENAFN) A large-scale disruption at Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Monday temporarily knocked several major websites and online services offline, interrupting access for millions of users worldwide.
The outage affected a broad range of platforms — from streaming and financial services to communication tools and news outlets — including Amazon’s own website, as well as Disney+, Lloyds Bank, Lyft, the New York Times, Reddit, and Zoom, according to reports.
AWS confirmed that it was dealing with “increased error rates and latencies” across several of its systems, adding that engineers were “working on multiple parallel paths to accelerate recovery.” The company later said it had made “significant” progress in restoring services and would issue additional updates as recovery continued.
According to the cloud provider, the technical difficulties were traced to one of its data centers servicing the US east coast, though no immediate explanation was provided for the cause.
This marks the latest in a series of major disruptions involving large-scale cloud infrastructure. A comparable incident occurred in July 2024 when a faulty software update from a cybersecurity company triggered global system crashes across Microsoft Windows networks.
