UN Chief Urges Global Action for Two-State Solution
"Let's be clear: Statehood for the Palestinians is a right, not a reward.
And the denial of statehood would be a gift to extremists everywhere," declared Antonio Guterres during the commencement of a senior-level UN conference focused on the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian matter.
He warned that "time is running out," explaining that trust continues to erode daily, governing institutions are deteriorating, and aspirations are being shattered.
Guterres denounced the intensifying humanitarian emergency in Gaza, stating that the territory "has descended into a cascade of catastrophes."
"I welcome recent steps to reduce restrictions to lifesaving humanitarian aid – but this is far from the solution to end this nightmare," he asserted.
"We need: An immediate, permanent ceasefire. The immediate, unconditional release of all hostages. Full and unfettered humanitarian access. These are not preconditions for peace. They are the foundation of it."
He further highlighted that Israel's "continued occupation of the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, is illegal," underscoring that "it must end. It is the law."
"There is no security in occupation," he concluded.
