Austria Voices Readiness for NATO Membership Debate
(MENAFN) Austria should be prepared to discuss the possibility of joining NATO, according to Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger.
She recognized, however, that such a move would likely not garner significant support from the public or the Austrian parliament at this time.
In a recent interview published on Saturday, Meinl-Reisinger discussed what she referred to as “an increasingly aggressive Russia,” emphasizing that Moscow seems unwilling to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine.
While Russia has expressed openness to dialogue, it has stressed that any resolution must address its core security concerns, particularly the condition that Ukraine remains permanently outside of NATO.
Meinl-Reisinger argued that “neutrality alone does not protect us.” She pointed out that Austria needs to enhance not just its “defense capabilities,” but also its military alliances.
"I am fundamentally very open to a public debate" about Austria's future in this regard, she remarked, adding that despite the current lack of a parliamentary or public majority in favor of NATO membership, such discussions could still be beneficial.
The minister further acknowledged, “it’s not that I wanted to join NATO with flying colors,” but stressed that Austria cannot afford to remain passive while the global geopolitical landscape shifts.
