Law enforcement raid offices of Russian Telegram channel
(MENAFN) Police conducted a raid on the offices of Baza, a leading Russian Telegram news outlet with over 1.6 million subscribers, charging its editor-in-chief and a senior reporter with bribery. Known for relying on anonymous police sources, Baza confirmed that officers seized documents and computers, and several staff members were taken for questioning. Footage showed masked officers removing items from the newsroom.
Earlier, police raided the apartment of Baza’s editor-in-chief, Gleb Trifonov, who was detained along with producer Tatyana Lukyanova. Investigators accuse them of purchasing official information from police and sharing it on Telegram. Trifonov’s lawyer said he pleaded not guilty after being charged following nearly 20 hours in custody. Lukyanova also denies any wrongdoing, though both admitted to occasionally paying for content related to sports and social events.
The case appears connected to a wider investigation into abuse of power and unlawful disclosure of confidential information in the Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk, and Belgorod regions. The Investigative Committee confirmed the questioning of Trifonov and Lukyanova, raids in multiple locations, and the detention of three police officers.
Baza’s CEO, Anatoly Suleymanov, stated the team will continue working amid the investigation, noting that the outlet’s accountant was also detained. A Moscow court will soon decide on pre-trial measures. If found guilty, the accused could face up to 12 years in prison, fines exceeding $38,000, and job restrictions.
Separately, two staff members from online outlet Ura.ru are reportedly under investigation for bribery.
