UN Chief, Trump Call for Immediate Ceasefire Between Cambodia, Thailand

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and U.S. President Donald Trump called on Saturday for Cambodia and Thailand to agree promptly to a ceasefire.

Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesperson for the UN chief, conveyed that Guterres urged both nations to halt hostilities immediately and resolve their conflict through dialogue aimed at achieving a lasting resolution.

Guterres "is deeply concerned about the continuation of armed clashes at the border between Cambodia and Thailand since 24 July," Haq emphasized.

Haq stated, "The Secretary-General condemns the tragic and unnecessary loss of lives, injuries to civilians and the damage to homes and infrastructure on both sides." He added that the UN chief "remains available to assist in any efforts towards a peaceful resolution of the dispute."

On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump announced that he had contacted Cambodia’s Prime Minister and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister to push for a ceasefire between the two nations.

According to Trump, both countries desire an immediate ceasefire and peace.

He added that the U.S. is currently engaged in trade discussions with Cambodia and Thailand but will refrain from finalizing any deals if fighting persists.

"After speaking to both Parties, Ceasefire, Peace, and Prosperity seems to be a natural. We will soon see," Trump wrote.

Following Trump’s intervention, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reaffirmed Cambodia's readiness for an "immediate and unconditional ceasefire" on Sunday after their phone conversation.

Thailand also responded on Sunday, agreeing in principle to a ceasefire but requested genuine commitment from Cambodia before fully committing.

Despite these calls, gunfire was still reported along the border early Sunday morning, according to the National Broadcasting Services of Thailand, citing Thai military sources.

The clashes erupted on Thursday in border regions, with both Cambodia and Thailand accusing each other of breaching international law. The UN Security Council convened a closed-door emergency session on Friday, acting on a request from Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to address the escalating violence.
