UK Premier Urges Emergency Meeting Over Gaza
This meeting, scheduled despite Parliament’s ongoing summer break, comes as the government faces mounting calls to officially recognize a Palestinian state.
Although ministers are currently on holiday until September 1, the urgency of the crisis in Gaza has prompted the government to call them back early.
These reports were initially disclosed by a news agency.
Additionally, Starmer is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump in Scotland on Monday.
During their meeting, Starmer is expected to press the White House for a stronger stance against Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy is also preparing to attend a UN conference in New York this week, which will focus on the prospects for a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.
The discussions at the summit will likely include potential steps toward recognizing a Palestinian state.
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli military has continued its harsh offensive on Gaza, rejecting international demands for a ceasefire.
The airstrikes have killed more than 59,800 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children.
The intense bombing campaign has also left the Gaza Strip in ruins, leading to severe shortages of food and basic supplies.
In response to these events, last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the situation in Gaza.
