Italy Reports Sharp Increase in West Nile Virus Cases

(MENAFN) The number of West Nile virus infections in Italy has spiked sharply in recent days, with 10 new cases reported, bringing the total nationwide to 20, including two fatalities, health officials confirmed on Thursday.

Eight of the patients have been admitted to hospitals in Campania, with four in critical condition in intensive care units across Aversa and Naples, as reported by media. The majority of those infected had recently traveled to Baia Domizia, a coastal region in Caserta province, where a virus hotspot is reportedly emerging.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. While the virus is present, there is currently no reason for particular alarm," Campania Governor Vincenzo De Luca stated.

In Lazio, two additional infections were identified in Latina province, pushing the region’s 2025 total to nine cases. The uptick follows the death of an 82-year-old woman in Latina on July 20.

West Nile virus is spread by the Culex pipiens mosquito, a nocturnal species common in the area. It is not transmitted directly between humans but can be spread through blood transfusions, organ transplants, or from mother to fetus in rare instances.

In response, Italian health authorities have activated protocols under the National Arbovirus Plan (PNA 2020–2025), with heightened focus on protecting vulnerable populations such as the elderly and immunocompromised.

To prevent further transmission through blood donations, the National Blood Centre (CNS) has rolled out screening in high-risk zones and issued a 28-day deferral for individuals who have traveled to areas with active infections.

Experts warn that many cases of West Nile virus are asymptomatic and often go unnoticed. The recent surge is being fueled by a combination of high heat, heavy rainfall, and migratory bird patterns, with Italy's zooprophylactic institutes continuing to track the virus in local wildlife.
