Residents Protest in Mexico Against Housing Costs
This event marked the second protest in recent months as critics argue that current housing strategies continue to prioritize the interests of real estate investors and wealthier newcomers over those of the local community.
As they marched down Insurgentes Avenue in the southern area of the city, under tight security, protesters chanted slogans and held signs demanding a halt to government-supported upscale developments and the escalating cost of rent.
A significant police presence, with officers dressed in riot gear, lined the demonstration route.
“We demand an end to gentrification, an end to real estate developers, and an end to these government policies that serve the interests of capitalism. I am a student, my classmates are students, and we have no guaranteed access to housing,” one participant told a news agency.
The municipal authorities responded by closing key roads near the demonstration and limiting public transit options, actions that many attendees condemned as efforts to stifle the protest.
Despite the heavy police monitoring, the march remained peaceful as demonstrators pressed officials to introduce measures aimed at reducing rent and securing affordable housing for everyone.
