Russian Warship Makes Second Visit to Equatorial Guinea

(MENAFN) The Russian naval training vessel Smolny has arrived in Equatorial Guinea for its second formal visit, according to a report by a news agency on Sunday.

This ship is part of Russia’s Baltic Fleet and was welcomed in the capital city of Malabo by high-ranking officers from the Equatorial Guinean Navy, Russian Ambassador Karen Chalyan, and embassy personnel.

In contrast to earlier journeys, this year’s expedition for the Smolny starts in Equatorial Guinea and will feature stops in South Africa, Tanzania, Sao Tome and Principe, the Republic of the Congo, and Vietnam.

The voyage is scheduled to conclude in Vladivostok, Russia, by the end of September.

The ship is transporting approximately 400 crew members, including 200 naval cadets who are participating in practical training at sea.

While docked in Malabo, these cadets are set to engage in a range of military and cultural activities such as a parade, a friendly soccer match, and interactions with the local Russian community.

As part of the official agenda, the commander of the Smolny provided Malabo’s senior naval officers with a guided tour of the vessel.

The visit featured an examination of the ship’s living quarters—which accommodate 15 Tanzanian cadets currently studying at Russian naval academies—as well as the command bridge and the medical facilities, including the onboard operating room and dental clinic.

This event comes after the Smolny’s 2024 tour, which included stops in various African countries such as Cameroon, Benin, the Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Namibia, and Angola.
