Syria Promises Justice Over Human Rights Violations in Sweida
In an official statement, the interim authorities voiced "deep concern" about the "distressing violations" reportedly unfolding across parts of Sweida in recent days, characterizing the incidents as "criminal and unlawful."
This response came after the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR)—a UK-based monitoring group—reported that Syrian defense and interior ministry forces were implicated in severe abuses during clashes that have rocked the province since Sunday.
The interim government asserted its "full commitment" to investigating the reported violations and emphasized that perpetrators would face justice in accordance with Syrian law.
Reaffirming solidarity with local communities, the statement underlined the government's "respect for the Druze community," calling Druze citizens "an integral part of Syria's national identity who have long exemplified patriotism, courage, and sacrifice."
The government’s remarks come amid growing backlash over the military’s actions in the region. On Tuesday, tanks and armored units were pulled back from Sweida under a truce negotiated with Druze leaders.
However, the ceasefire has done little to calm the situation. Violent confrontations flared up again on Tuesday and Wednesday, accompanied by Israeli airstrikes. The renewed conflict has displaced thousands of residents.
According to SOHR, the death toll from the continuing unrest in Sweida has risen to 248.
The current wave of violence began after an armed group of Bedouins allegedly assaulted and robbed a young Druze man. In response, Druze fighters detained several Bedouin individuals, sparking a wider conflict that has rapidly escalated.
