Court commands Le Pen family to give EU EUR300k

(MENAFN) The EU General Court in Luxembourg has mandated Marine Le Pen and her two sisters to return more than €300,000 (around $350,000) to the European Union. The money was deemed improperly received by their late father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, during his tenure as a Member of the European Parliament, the court announced on Wednesday.

In 2024, the EU accused Jean-Marie Le Pen of wrongly invoicing personal expenses and demanded reimbursement. After his death in January, his daughters took over the legal case as his heirs.

Jean-Marie Le Pen, founder of the right-wing National Front and a vocal critic of the EU, served as an MEP from 1984 to 2019. His strong stances on national sovereignty and immigration, once considered fringe, have since influenced European political discourse significantly.

This ruling follows Marine Le Pen’s recent conviction for embezzling EU funds. Despite her denial of any misconduct, she was sentenced to prison, fined €100,000 ($116,000), and barred from holding public office for five years—effectively hindering her 2027 presidential bid. She has appealed the conviction, with a verdict expected in summer 2026.

In the 2022 presidential election, Marine Le Pen advanced to a run-off, capturing over 42% of the vote but losing to Emmanuel Macron, who won 58%.

Le Pen’s conviction sparked protests from her supporters, who accuse authorities of politically motivated actions to suppress opposition. Former US President Donald Trump criticized the French establishment, calling for her release and condemning what he described as legal harassment against the right-wing leader.
