Turkey’s air defense network is fully domestic
Haluk Gorgun, head of the Defense Industries Secretariat (SSB), explained that the system was engineered to detect and neutralize threats across a wide spectrum—from long-range missiles to close-range attacks—while operating under a centralized control framework. His remarks came during an event hosted by SAHA Istanbul, a leading defense industry organization.
According to Gorgun, the Steel Dome incorporates several key components, including the Siper, Hisar A+ and O+, Korkut, and Sungur systems. These elements are unified under a single command-and-control infrastructure, which brings together radars, electro-optical sensors, signal jamming technology, and laser systems to create a highly responsive and adaptable defense mechanism.
Artificial intelligence powers the command-and-control architecture, allowing it to generate optimal response strategies and relay them to the appropriate units quickly and efficiently.
“The AI support to the decision-making mechanism plays a key role in speed and accuracy, alongside human decisions,” he said.
“If we had purchased instead of produced these systems that make up the Steel Dome, this level of interoperability would have been a massive engineering problem.”
The system marks a significant step in Türkiye’s efforts to build a self-reliant and technologically advanced defense industry.
